Exchange Portfolios 1992 - 2005 by Michael Florrimell
1992 - Partners in Print Present Reciprocal Portfolio.
Shown at the APW access studios in George street Fitzroy.
Late in 1991 while working as an artist at the Australian Print Workshop Access
Studios, I asked the then technician Marian Crawfrod if the APW would be interested
in arranging an artists exchange portfolio. I had been involved in a similar exchange
at RMIT involving staff and students in 1990 and wanted to extend the idea of exchange
beyond a university setting.
1993 - Partners in Print present Melbourne, Sydney Exchange Portfolio.
In late 1992 I left Melbourne to undertake an MVA at Sydney College of the Arts.
After talking to staff at SCA, members of the Sydney Printmakers and Marian Crawford
back in Melbourne we decided to put together an exchange of 10 Melbourne and 10
Sydney artists.
10 portfolios were donated to art institutions;
The Australian Print Workshop, National Gallery of Australia, New South Wales Art
Galley, London Print Workshop, Edinburgh Print Workshop, State Library of Victoria
and the Print Council of Australia.
The donations were directed to institutions which allow their collections to viewed
by the public. It was also the aim of Partners in Print to get the work of contemporary
printmakers represented in major Australian collections.
1995 - Partners in Print present Exchange Portfolio 1995, Melbourne - Sydney
- Hobart - Canberra.
In late 1994 Marian in Melbourne and myself in Sydney coordinated
our last exchange portfolio together with the help of Ray Arnold from Hobart and
Basil Hall from Canberra. There were 7 artists from each city who Participated.
6 extra editions of the Portfolio were donated to the collections of the NSW Art
Gallery, Sydney University, Print Council of Australia, Tasmanian School of Art,
Australian Print Workshop and Studio One. The portfolio was finished and exhibited
in 1995 at the APW.
1997 - Firestation Print Workshop Portfolio
In 1997 I returned to Melbourne to live for two years. After becoming an artist
in residence at the Fire Station Print Workshop, I was employed for a short term
as a teacher technician. I put a suggestion forward at an FPW committee meeting
that I arrange an exchange portfolio of FPW members. 32 artists contributed, eight
extra editions were donated to London Print Workshop, Edinburgh Print Workshop,
Arts Victoria, Print Council of Australia, NSW Art Gallery, Stonnington City Council,
State Library of Victoria, and the FPW.
1998 - Firestation Print Workshop Portfolio
A similar FPW exchange was arranged with donations going to NSW Art Gallery, State
Library of Victoria, Print Council of Australia, and the FPW. In late1998 I travelled
to England to visit the London Print Workshop. It was in London I meet up with 8
artists who were making prints who contributed to the 1999 Exchange.
1999 - Exchange.
On my return from London I arranged a 35 artists exchange with artists from around
Australia and artists living in London. The 1999 portfolio was the first EPPM to
invite artists from outside Australia to participate. The title of the Portfolio
was Partnersn in Print Present 1999 Exchange. Unfortunately this exchange portfolio
did not have enough English artists involved to become an England - Australia portfolio.
The 1999 Exchange was the first totally independent exchange EPPM attempted
outside of other institutions. There were no donation editions given away in 1999
as artists were not asked to edition any extra prints. The size of A4 was an experiement
in using a size of paper normally associated with standard every day use. Artists
used a variety of print mediums from wood to digital.
2000 - Exchange 2000
In 1999 I advertised for artists working in print from all over Australia to submit
interest for a 45 artists exchange in the year 2000. 10 extra editions of the portfolio
will be donated to various collections in Australia and Overseas. The Edition size
was 55 A4 prints, the largest edition EPNP has attempted to date. Artists used a
variety of print media. In 2000 Partners in Print changed their name to Exchange
Partners in Print and registered as a non profit artists run organisation. EPPM
also started their web site with the help of a NAVA grant. Paul Somerset fell into
the role of site development for EPPM adding a new dimension to the way in which
information and images could be viewed. Paul's role has also extended ideas and
ways artists can now become involved with EPPM .
2001 - Exchange 2001. Nature, Love and Sin.
In 2001 EPPM organised 3 themed 25 edition A3 size portfolios. The themes were 1.
Nature 2. Love 3. Sin. There were 20 artists involved in each portfolio. 8 Thai
artists participated. This portfolio included 8 CD Roms as well as traditional paper
works.
2002 - Exchange. Art and Politics.
In 2002 EPPM ran a 30 artist exchange on the theme of Art and Politics. In 2002
EPPM offered a prize for best entry and for best written comments and gallery uploads.
These were won by Natalie Sheids, Michael Zschech and Gerard Morresy. This portfolio
included 6 CD Roms.
2003 - Fashion / Culture / Music
In 2003 EPPM ran one 35 edition portfolio on the topics of Fashion, Culture or Music.
In 2003 EPPM has attempted to improve the collectabity of the portfolio. To this
end CD Roms are excluded as well as digital transfer or photocopy of work.
2004 Green Worlds - Revolution - Feminism
Completed two portfolios Green Worlds 27 edition and Revolution/Feminism 31
edition. The portfolios were judged by Ruth Johnstone and Gwenda Flintof from the
Print Council of Australia. Prizes were awarded to Michael Zschech, Gerard Morrisey
and Jo Ernsten. The the Australian Print Workshop will showed the portfolio in February
2005. In 2004 EPPM asked contributing artists to provide proofs before printing
their final editions.
2005 Portrait - Landscape - Still Life
Completed two portfolios Landscape 30 edition and Portrait/Still Life 24 edition.
The portfolios were judged by Ann Virgo from the Australian Print Workshop and Gwenda
Flintof from the Print Council of Australia. Prizes were awarded to Rebecca Beardmore,
Anne-Maree Hunter and Paul Thirkle.
