Hellow Narelle, The quality of your medium/print is excellent especially the colours and tones you have used. I respect the intelligent symbols and words you have used in your artwork. For example: "We don't have to think...", "We don't have to care...". the name Goya, the Oz empty hills hoist, all colours plus all tones of black and white, "nullius" and the title of the print "terror australis" "boat people" and the human image of terror. Who is this human image of terror? Coming from terror? Or going into terror? Or the psycholigical fear of terror imagined in our minds (asleep or awake)? Your print screams "QUALITY OF THINKING". Thanks. . -M/Z Reply
Very nice to hear such positive feedback -thank you! The figure on the right - "Terror Australis" - was inspired by an image from recent Australian history, a newspaper photo taken during the waterfront dispute. A picture of a menacing thug in a balaclava, one of the government trained mercenaries who took over the docks, the image fascinated me as it seemed so totally alien to the much vaunted Australian way of life. This image, resembling some terrorist from one of the many less than lucky countries in the world, stayed in my mind for some time and gained greater force as Australia became obsessed with the threat of foreign terrorism. The irony being that the hapless refugees that Howard used to win the last election posed far less threat to Australian democracy than a strike broken by such underhand means. Interestingly enough, given the Government's later fear-mongering about all things Islamic, these mercenaries were trained in Dubai. It was ok back then for a government to engage with such places for dodgy ends but a few years later every poor bastard on a leaky ship with an Arab name was a possible terrorist. The image of the thug also recalled for me one of Goya's Los Proverbos etchings. The title of Goya's work Bobabilicon, which as I understand it in Spanish means "Big Booby" or silly thing, seems to contradict the disturbing image - a large, shadowy figure with an sinister grin menacing a couple (the image in black overlaying the sailing ship is a simple line-drawing based on the etching) it is at once an image of fear and yet a joke, the title implying that it is a false fear. I've used elements of this image again underneath the line drawing, this time with the faces blurred out, like the photos of the children overboard. Goya's ambivalent image of fear, along with the newspaper picture of the thug seemed to me perfect references for analysing our current state of fear and how these fears are depicted in the our culture. The images of boat people "invading" our "carefree, democratic" shores was used by Howard as a boogie man to frighten the electorate during the last election but the truly frightening image of Reith's workplace- relations thug does not seem to have registered in the public mind. . -Narelle Adair Coxhead Reply
The trouble with the work place in Australia today is not that people don't regiistar whats going on. The trouble is there is not enough work for everyone so the goverment and employers have to much choice and this means workers dont what to rock there own boats by standing out and losing their jobs. There is little union or workers rights left and most work is causul so workers can be sacked easy. I have just returned to the work force and see how fragile the workers jobs are daily. In my last two jobs even worse. When I was working for universitys the back stabbing from other workers teacher etc was shocking. It all came down to fear of losing ones job, so this made compition ruthless if you don't believe me try working in an art dept at any university in Australia. . -Michael Florrimell Reply

Hi Ann, Is this a self portrait? As I hold your print in my hands and look into the eyes of the woman (I THINK),I perceive a certain quiet sadness but eyes of knowledge, experience and caution. Great texture and tones. I find her beautiful. As with a lot of the artworks on this website only a section of the whole print is shown. The bottom section reminds me of 'a black hole' or 'a bottomless moving and swirling pit' also a play-ball of twine inside I see a fetus/baby quietly asleep and growing inside it's mother, not yet aware of the external world of exiles, outcasts, boatpeople, refugees, prisoners, etc...(as you have intelligently listed in your artwork. Thank you for this wonderful print.

Jim, please tell us something about this intriguing composite. Who are these people?
. -Paul Somerset
Reply
Hi Paul. This intriguing person was Pym a populist Dutch politician who was murdered last year. He believed among other things examining the viability of 'farming' fur bearing animals for their pelts.
His views conflicted with those of the person accused of shooting him.
The text is in Dutch.

Hey Jim, Technically it is impossible to fault the use of your medium in design/colour/photographic quality, colour and tone. What is the name of the paper? Your print content is chilling. I heard on the news that the Christian Democrats romped into power this week. Is that right? Was he really shoot because of his stance on fur or because of his genetic/biological makeup? Sexuality? As a person whom lived and taught in Cunnamulla, Queensland years ago, I was able to witness truck loads and truck loads of roos and ferral pigs shoot for markets else where. The ferral pigs went to Germany (still covered in dry mud, the way they like to buy them). The farming of kangaroos instead of sheep (British concept) and cattle (USA concept)was often discussed but never happened. Roos are suitable for the land and don't destroy it as sheep and cattle do. Why not farm roos, the land would benefit. Is it the Oz "Skippy Syndrome" holding this type of farming back or that only "REAL" people eat "BEEF"? I like the finger suggesting repeated silence. Is it better to stay silent and say nothing or provoke/encourage killers? Shoocking waist. Thank you for this awareness. Wicked print - true politics - thanks.

You are obviously a person of acute aesthetic sensibilityand extremely good taste. Actually the paper is important but the SECRET, (all artists have secrets, right?) is threefold the printer & pigments, the paper and the software.
I use an Epson Photostylus 2000 beacuse the ink pigments are guaranted for 200 years without fading under accelerated light tests. This is according to an independent testing lab in the USA. Since our Prime Minister asures us that the USA has our best interests at heart I bought an Epson printer. I mean if you can't beleive Americans is there any truth in the world?
I found the report on the digital artists website. This is a 6 colour printer but I set my computer to output CMYK files. I also use the maximum setting to get as much pigment as possible on the paper. i can get 12 to 14 A3 prints with this setting before I have to replace the cartridges.
The paper is Epson A3 Archival paper. Epson also has a really good A3 supersize (oversize) watercolour paper. However the archival paper has less tooth so the printed surface, especialy big flats of one colour works much better.
Software.
Images scanned and cleaned up & manipulated in Photoshop 7. The photo images were saved as TIFF files.
I used the CorelDRAW 11 suite , on a Macintosh, to complete the image. This means I used PhotoPaint to apply more filters to the images and then imported the Photopiant images into CorelDRAW to make the graphics and create the text. PhotoPaint has some unique filters that I like. I find that CorelDraw is easier to use than Adobe Illustrator, particlualry for node editing and when applying gradients. Illustrator does some funny things when PhotPaint images are imported, even as TIFFs. that's why I use CorelDRAW for the final image.
So that's the Secret.
Yes the Christian Democrats romped it home in the latest Dutch elections. The person who is accused of shooting Pym said if he did it, it was because of what Pym proposed to do to annimals.
I agree with you about farming roos instead of imported European animals. I think real people eat beef because of the beef lobby has a large budget
.
I lived in Tasmaina and I used to go to the game btcher and buy wallaby mince for skippy burgers, you have to add some bacon to the mince. I tried to get thylacine mince , but he butcher said Thylacines were extinct. I couldn't understand thisd because you can see them in some beer commercials.
If you know anybody who speaks Dutch get them to translate the text. Also look up the political context of the colour orange in terms of Protestant/Catholic ideology.
When did you live in Cunnamulla?
My partner lived there for a very short while and had some rather unusual experices so she left, .

Hey Jim, sorry it took ages to reply as I wanted to comment on all other artist's work first so I didn't appear discriminatory, display bias or nepotism and favouritism but based my comments on equal and a fair approach to all comments. I lived in Cunnamulla 1991/92 and taught art at Cunnamulla State School. It would take hours to discuss what I experienced there (negative and positive). However I will simply state that a photograph exists (somewhere) of myself and other teachers leaving town after 2+ years service to QLD Department of Education, showing all of us "brown-eyeing" in the direction of Cunnamulla, on the center of the road next to the sign "Welcome to Cunnamulla" as we headed out of town for the 12 hour journey back to the coast.

I thaught graphic student printmaking at Newcastle uni in 1995-7.The first year I was there they told me to teach every thing about the process of printmaking. I used each class for a differnt meduim during the semester teach wood, lino etching ,lithography, silkscreen, photography, digital, and internet. The students went away with a litte sample folder at the end of term. Second term comes around and I am pulled into the dean of graphic designs office and told that im not to teach anything past silkscreen that photography digital and internet are not printmaking and not to be taught out side of graphic dept. The politics that went on around the depts at Newcaslte uni were sad. Students were told how to think and not to think, by lecturers that had only minds for keeping there jobs. The sadest thing about the whole experieince was that Alan the head of graphic design was my old graphic lecturer at Preston College Melbourne. But then again he always was a punchy bastard, and hell he did me a big fav, by sacking me as I woulld not like to be still teaching at University anyway. Oih Coralie, at first glance I thought your print was a screen-print but upon closer inspection as I hold your print I see it's not and guess it was drawn on your PC using the "mouse" and an "art programme". Right or wrong? I reminds me of some of Picasso's work and the use of two colours/tones on white. Yes, creatures are in crisis because of the capitalistic, materialistic, environmental rapists and pilligers. My favourite TV show is National Geographic, brilliant show, except for the two accent/language types which dominate my ear space (either poppy-dick-plumb or Mark-mark-mark accents). I see in your print: a fish, bird, whale, types of symbolic animals, leaves, shells, the moon and bacteria. I love/respect (even snakes at a distance) all creatures as I think you do. Well done and thanks.

Many thanks for the comments. Heady stuff, comparisons with Picasso; but this old bird has her feet firmly on the ground. Yes the print was done on my eMac, and printed on my 2000P Epsom printer. Colours and paper are guaranteed for at least 200 years. I use the environment as a starting point, but create my own world with my personal symbols, which seem to have evolved over the years - many years of drawing. Have always loved to draw, which I gues is why my work is so linear. I did supply an artist's statement with my print , but it seems to have gone astray. Coralie

Hey Chris, Good title: "The art of playing with people's lives", oh yes that's exactly what politics is all about - no genunine regard for the individual and their feelings. I see on the sides of the two boxes the words "art and health". My quess is that they are symbolic dice being rolled from the hand. Are they? Whose hand? Politicians? Knocking people (the public) down randomly as they are rolled, giving the appearence they (the politicians) are doing something but in essence nothing actually happens because it all depends on how the dice fall. Not based on logic, reason or common sence. They hate the word "common" as no "commoner" is ever accepted genuinly. "HARVARD TYPE ATTITUDE SHIT". It's all a closed club. I like the end quality of your print. I'd like to know the exact technical process you went through to achieve this output quality - contruction, drawing, photography, output. I can guess but I'd prefer to know from you so I can learn and understand. Thanks for this great print, it will remind me to watch out very carefully for any dice thrower. Maybe we could slip them a dice (without them knowing) with the same word on each side, so we always win. Which word "ART" or "HEALTH" or "WISDOM"? Cheers.

Hi Rachael, "Clearfelling - A Crime", Oh yes it is! What is the technique you have used in this top art work? My guess as I hold your print, is that it is a wood block as I can slightly see embossing and collage? Is the image of rivers running into the ocean or an ariel viewpoint looking from a plane? Very subtle use of colour (no "GREEN"!). As a child I walked behind a dozer pulling a large ball and chain on my parents farm at River Heads, QLD. Not a smart move bare-foot. I was bitten by a brown snake that had been half buried/crushed into the soil. This was an early teaching lesson for me re: clear felling. What do you think? Factually - 1: clearfelling affects water quality, 2: On the Tasman Peninsula there is a serious shortage of water with many of the streams drying up and water carters having to go as far as Sorell for water supplies, 3: Selective logging has been a feature of Peninsula life for almost two centuries, it is only in recent years that there has been a significant of clearfelling operations in PUBLIC NATIVE FORESTS of the Peninsula, 4: Research by the scientists at the Melbourne Metropolitian Board of Works has found that clearfelling operations affected water quality. 5: Total removal of trees and the compaction of the forest floor in clearfelled coups results in a initial strong water run-off in the wet winter months. Thanks for this print - it cuts deep into my conscious.

Hi Dagmar, the positive aspects I respect about your print are 1: this looks like 'HOME-EDUCATION' (the best and only way to go, there are many courses all ages can do at home 'ONLINE', check out TAFE Australia-all States) 2: Home education is a viable, legal option for families (all types) in Australia. A significant number of families have chosen to home-educate their children. For some, this is a long term commitment, with the childer entering college, university or employment after many years at home. For others, it provides short-term time-out for a child who may be having problems at school, especially boys, due to the lack/imbalance of male teachers and due to the destructive "GENDER EQUITY" policies enforced by "nasty and bitter male-hating femenist teachers in the classrooms", who give preferential treatment to girls. 3: In many cases, home educated childern have gone on to excel academically or in arts or sport. The freedom to learn at individual rates appears to have been beneficial in enabling their talents to develop. 4: Research has shown that, generally, home-educated children and adults are confident socially and, indeed, show maturity beyond their years. THEAC has produced an information kit on home education. To recieve a copy, phone 03-63345381 or email hom.ed@tassie.net.au. Lets not play "checkers" with boys lives any more or wear dark sun glasses or do it blind-fold any more. I stand up for the rights of all "boys/males" in Australia. Stop the harassment, discrimination (through policies) and unfair treatment of boys in the classrooms of Australia (both public and private school systems). A great and personally provocative print in content - very, very cutting-edge and grass-roots politics. I would love to see the original lithograph but still respect the digital transfer. Cheers and thank you Dagmar. . -M/Z Reply
As I understand it -there is actually a shortage in many/most? states in Oz of male preschool and primary and even probably-truth be known - high school teachers. The NSW Tchrs Fed.spokespersons recently decried. Due to the many new harassment laws and cases and the difficulty in our "CULTURE" of men especially expressing genuine warmth and affection in the face of these intricate pitfalls-not to mention Wage$- the children- especially BOYS are put at risk of suffering lack of role models. I agree w you Z. But then for me it was of equal concern that girls be safely placed in a co-ed environment. Really the coin spins both ways.I can recall my 2 sons screeching to be removed-as they were (gender and maturity)successfully-from a single sex And Ironically often more Expen$ive school some years ago. I really like the linework in this Dagmar- is it a lithograph? (Sorry windows playing up). Also really like the symbolic use of specifically the chess board. Here's one for you Z- in Hungarian both the word for Chess n Checkmate is like Zschech tho pronounced Shuck w a slightly longer "Uhh"n not quite "Oh" sound.N I'm improvising a bit w the phonetic graphing of the word to Aryan script.Comparatively- many chess greats from there/near there.Don't be so acerbic Z. Life's full of many pointless perhaps but funny/sweet treats. Dagmar love the intimacy in the subjects in this print.Shohck! . -Teece Reply

Hi Jo, "TOIL" or "SOMETIMES THE WRONG THING FEELS RIGHT". At first glance I thought this print was an etching, at a closer look and by reading your medium statement I realise it's a screenprint. What stencils did you use? Gum and paper stencils? The OZ Labour Party has conned us into thinking that working or "TOIL" (HARDER AND FASTER NOW DRONES/SLAVES) will get you there 9your goals) - more taxes for them. However a prophet of ancient times, praised a person for sitting (listening/thinking and doing nothing -no toil) and rebuked their friend for being so busy with tasks and toil. We can learn from this, if we want! Hard work (toil) will eventually get you, but thinking and listening (an important part of the personal communication process) will get you there faster and with less stress. From whose cultural context do you decide what is right and wrong? Your's, Mine's, George W. Dog's or Osoma Bin Dog's contexts? Thanks for this clever and personally challening print.

POLITICS and ART does verse POLITICS. Art will always win, but kind of art
though? I see you have 10 verbal comments on 10 subjects in your CD-ROM. Are
you reading your verbal comments off of written flash-cards behind the camera?
You have achieved the zero glamour look - academic? Books and clothes - what
about the conservative hair cut? So Big Brother 3 must have more "IN DARRR
HOUSE!" types or I won't be following it. And more genunine Ozzie types. What
is an Ozzie today anyway? Genetic X-Convict genes are disappearing from some
areas but in other areas, "Oh my God straight out of the ball and chains look".
What else would you expect as we all know they are part "corgie-kissers" and
from where! Someone should do a series on the skull and head shapes of the
imperialistic invaders as was done with the Australian Aborigines by the
invaders to back up Darwin's evolution theory. I think large flapping ears
would reoccur as a part of the statistics and gathered data. What do you think?
Just a bit of political, positive discrimination through turning it back on

product, I'll submit it or else I'll burn it. Cheers. . -M/Z

 Hey
Michael, the content in your art work is highly organised. The way you have
broken it up into 11 sections makes it easy to follow. The sections/discussions
are in order 1-11. Firstly Art followed by Politics, Books, Music, Artists,
Administrators, Green, Architecture, Solar, M1 Protests and finally Good-Bye.
Words that you used during the "interview genre'/style/medium" that remained in
my mind were: personal, detached, equality, happy, become, community, struggle,
poor, bleek, negative, produce, piss, out, public, art world, confuse, simple,
thinking, green, expressive, believe, struggle, don't, wait, set, brilliant,
ASAP, good-bye. You have given me some ideas for the 2003/2004 DVD submission.
Thanks. I have since changed my content theme for the DVD. Take care and don't
work harder and faster, harder and faster, continue to think and create
instead, as you have been doing! . -Z

 Thanks
for sorting out the words Michael. I have to admit it now I did have a script
that I wrote in about 10 mins. One would think most of the comments I made were
commen thought through out Australia. But no I am afraid not Amigos. I got the
big brother interest right though Another record of millions of veiwer through
out the Aust winter ahh Voda Phone must love us. The topics in my mind were
about the only serious attempt to be politics. I mean if I say M1 protest to
anyone they will either go yeh or nah. Like or hate me within a second. People
have an instant veiw on topics, and then comes the arguement. The trouble with
arguement is that if the interest dont give instant gratifation to a human then
their not really that interested. Politics who needs it and Politicains who
could trust them. HAHAHAHAHA chew on that one. . -Michael Florrimell

 This
was one video clip of me rattling on from 10 clips on the cd rom I presented.
This clip was about my Fav artists. I like heaps more but only had about 20
secs for each of the 10 clips on the cd. The idea of speaking about a subject
in detail over a ten sec period is kind of novice but, the attention span of
most veiwers when looking at artists work is about this. Ever been to an Andy
Worhol film of about 2 hours most people walk out or rage out. They just can't
stand to understand the further nature of making art. It has to be served up
fast like Mc Donalds to the general public. . -Michael Florrimell

At present i havn't got my portfolio> but from first viewing on the website(which incidently is fantastic-brilliant work guys!) this print really grabbed me-it stands out even in this medium and has that unique quality of being initially grapically simple drawing you into the more murky/grainy underlying images, good use of colour too! . -Gerard Morrissey Reply
thanks Gerard for your comments. What's the folio your putting together, prints?!! I'm based in Melbourne and have been getting into silkscreen alot this year and loving it! I will do a limited edition rage of t-shirts with this image on it, let me know if you want one!!! Have a wicked and abundant new year, speak to you in it. Atlanta . -Atlant Frith Reply
Yes I liked this work, the canvas was a good idea, I wish more artists would try something a bit different than paper always adds contrast to the work. Reminds me of St Kilda fesival, I had a great time there last year especially at the drumming stage. . -Michael Florrimell Reply
go atlanta,i'd love a print,be sure to sell your work to the hilt,it's original well designed and would seem made by someone with business interest. . -gerard morrissey Reply
Hey Atlanta, I agree with Michael F., it would be great to see more artists printing onto cloth/canvas or other mediums other than paper. Maybe you have inspired me to do this for next year's portfolio, not sure yet. Also with Gerard in relation to selling your work. Possibly the recent, past era in OZ art, "of if it sells or is commercial/popular then your art is "LOW" art or pasae' crap" is over. I would like a T-shirt with your on it as well. How do I organise this and what's the price? Are you a Korrie or a Murrie? Did you get approval to use the Aboriginal "dot-style" in this art work from ATSIC? (Did Albert Namagera get approval to use the European water-colour style from the Queen when he did his art works?) Or is this a political statement coming from "A CLOWN"S MOUTH" suggesting it's all a joke/con and going down like the arrow and the leaning tower of "PIZZA" (Ham and Pineapple please) in your print? Is that your self portrait sitting like a monkey on the back/shoulder of the masked person? If so you are very beautiful. Thanks for this fun and intellectual work. Hey Gerard write your positive comments in the "PRAISE" section of PNP as well, as an example for other artists to follow and crush "THE TALL POPPY SYNDROME/MENTALITY THAT EXISTS IN OZ". Cheers and thanks again Atlanta. . -M/Z Reply
