Laura, Good use of quality paper, the deckle edging sholud be shown when the print is framed. What do you think? I like the simplicity and use of 2 complementary colours, tones of red and green. Also the background extremes of shades, black and white. Did you screen-print the colours onto the paper before applying the etching plate coloured black? What are the figures symbolic of (angles of "WAR" ?) and what are they doing - dancing, fighting, communicating their inner thoughts and feelings or what? This is a great print. I see the figures mouths are open. What inner dialogue/sounds are comming out? Words of "PEACE" or piss and wind, just like the proverbial barber's cat?

Natalie, Super special print, great to look at and feel as well. What sex is the repeated head; male or female, and what gender is the image; feminine, masculine or neuter? Who is the person in your printand what motivated you to choose this person? Initially it reminded me of some of Andy Warhole's 60's work - "cool". It also brought to mind a song I was taught in early primary school, it went "RED, RED JUMP INTO BED; RED, RED THERE'S A 'COMMIE' UNDER YOUR BED; RED, RED JUMP OR LEAP INTO BED". For years, as a child I feared this thing called a "COMMIE" but the song did encourage good broad jummping skills and I didn't dare move once under the sheets. I know better now. Thanks for this print.

 It's not mis inofrmantion Paul.
It is "statements adjusted in the light of new information and the ratbag medias' misinterpertion of hypotheical answers to innapropriate questions.'
Yes politicians everywhere have their hard work denigrated by the lumpen proletariat who do nothing but criticise their work, rather than produce viable answers to problems.
I'm glad your archiving of these statements, corrections, adjustments, refinements, and clarifications saves you from the destructive effects of anger. You obviously realise your elected representatives are helping you overcome unacceptable aspects of your world view. I am sure, given time, if everyone adopted your methods we would have a healthier, more cohesive culture.

The Greens just got about 10% of the vote in Victoria. I guess this was the Democrates vote which is great as the demos have lost it. I mean 5 leaders in about a year more about power than policies, hopeless bunch. Lets hope Garret goes green and shows them all about political agendas that are now important to Australia, and how we are percived overseas for our politics. Liberal and Labour may as well be one party and the green the other oppossing every thing those two out of order out of polices partys have to offer. We need changes in Australian politics now, before we stuff up any more than we have been over the last 50 years. Go Green start thinking of the future and put the past to rest.
. -Michael Florrimell
Reply
I'm not so sure that putting the past to rest is a good idea Michael. All of the past? Does that mean the reconciliation process stops or gets frgotten? Does that mean Australians have to forget about the cornerstones of our culture like the Ashes and Bodyline? What would we do in the summer if we couldn't get bored watching the cricket?
Maybe out politicians just have to get more in tune with what the average Australian wants.

I thought the deathly banality of politics in Australia is because politicians are far too concerned with what people say they want. The lack of jobs for school leavers has unlocked a mass of university trained experts in banal subjects such as marketing and media communications. These graduates have eventually filtered corporate market speak into the political parties. They brand their product, stay on message and watch those polls for signs of market acceptance of their product.
. -Paul Somerset
Reply
Yep well the greens are a marketing plot just like anything else these days we live in times of hype and cash flow.
But maybe its the idea of wanting to clean up the world as we know it and thats everyones choice. Even if we did have polies that said do this clean up your act would the humans do it. Lets all start with Solor energy and wind energy. And everyone get on your bike more than your car, bike riding is good for your health and good for the earth. Vote for who ever you like as this is not the problem the problem is everyone on the planet has to agree to do something together that wil help clean up our planet. Cheers

Did anyone hear John Howard running rings around Kathrine McGrath on AM this morning. He lead with an excellent diversion. The genius of Howard's diversions is that they are always themselves contentious.

Hey Paul, How's it hanging? The presentation of your CD-ROM is 'TOP'. Black-white-mid/grey. Minimalist/stylish/clear/simplistic - good and easy to read (for those who do not have vision impairment that is). However the content of the CD-ROM, in some ways is opposite. Very, very clever. Man you have to be fast at answering the questions, especially after a few drinks! This should, in some way be accessible for all website viewers/visitors to look at, not just the "Choosen 35" at their own PC. What do you think? How can this be done through this website? You are a top-notch computer wiz, I'm sure you will find a way, as the technical side is way out of my depth, knowledge and understanding, but I'm willing to learn and personally challenge myself. The content/message of your work is excellent and very excellent. Humour and game playing is the best way to communicate our thoughts, as sender (you) communicates to reciever (me). You are an excellent communicator through your CD-ROM. Message recieved and understood. Well done. Suggestion, don't get angry, don't get even, but get everything (reclaim-reclaim-reclaim as you are in the process of doing). Chin up and get serious through laughter. It had been a while since my last documentary video venture. My techniques had become rusty and needed reviving. I had heard about the S11 protests on T.V. and talkback radio. Perhaps I should investigate? After all I did still have my Media Pass acquired many years ago. With a little luck I may still be able to convince officials that it is still current.

This cd is well placed in the time of mass media politics and world wide protests. The Politicains and Mass media need to take some notice of what protesting people are saying. Instead of making them out to be the enemy of the state they should be holding them up to be the heros they are. Anyone who does not think war is murder, green is not essencial, and globalization is unfair to third world countrys has rocks in their heads.
. -Michael Florrimell
Reply
If people take notice of what you are saying and think you are a hero then there is no need to protest. The current world view espoused by those who claim to know is that the only thing that motivates people is self interest. It is a sad view of humanity but that is what people vote for and what those idealistic kids will be doing in a few years too once they get the taste of a bit of real money.

Hey Bob, I think I've changed my mind on which print is my personal favourite. It's yours! Even though "favouritism" suggests bias and unequal discrimination of other team players. So I will call this a "positive discrimination" choice (political crap language). I like your print because it's strong, progressive in content and masculine in appearence. There is a lot going on in it and I'm not bored looking at it. Is your face in the print? There are many "handsome" men in the dark, sobering image. After looking at your CD-ROM Video, I now understand what S11 protests (Melbourne)are about and the reasons for protesting against all World Economic Forums. I have also been updated, informed and educated after reading the comments to your art works. I'm glad each team player has different skills and talents from each other. That's what makes each of us unique and individually special (not all clones). Where one lacks, another team player can make up. It's called "sand-papering" each other for the site's community progression. You have inspired me to start videoing data/ideas for submission for 2004 group artists CD-Rom. Thanks for this - money can not purchase personal art inspiration. I will need help and assistance to do it though. I would like advice form Michael.F., Paul.S. and yourself for the end product so it reflects what I want to "expose" (artistically). I think "some" of the mass media in OZ have stopped "kissing arse" since 11th September and are realising the general public (in general) won't either. May my God (mysterious) protect you and give you your heart's desires. Cheers and thanks for the brilliant and inspiring art works. Take care.

Artists Statement:
I have been interested in the use of the Madonna figure and child, generated by the Catholic Church during the Renaissance period. At this time, the Madonna image was used as a method to elevate the role of women as mothers.
The Madonna image is now being used to promote and advertise the modern IVF programme, and the advancement of this technology. The image provides a subtle "transparency" to promote the "good" of the programme: and hides the "bad" or non acceptance of this method by the Catholic Church.
All the issues in regards to this technology do not seem to be addressed to the women who use the technology. It is a manufacturing process or "fix-it-mentality" without thought to the human beings who use this process, of do not want to use it. The use of the Madonna to me, is a cover up for the reality. Women have not been part of the final decision making process in the use of this technology.

Hellow Jan, Thanks for your artist statement as it helps to educate people about the content/message of your print. What is a flexographic print and the process? I find this print a very personal, sensitive and delicate print to look at and especially to hold in my hands. At one point in time when I was interested in "breeding" (never again), an "X" and I went through the I.V.F. programme together. It was a most insensitive and cold process for both of us (male and female), like experimental guinea pigs at the mercy of technology and capitalistic doctors. Injecting 'excess' hormones taken from "virgin NUNS urine" each morning for 4 weeks to create extra overy/egg production (Oh my God!). Then wait for nothing and be told to try again (and pay $$$$). Not only do the Catholics reject this but many organised religious denomations reject it. It was refered to as a demonic rape and not of God, then that ended that saga! Interesting that the POPE'S Xmas message for 2002 contained, "Have more babies"! Is the POPE himself a "breeder"? What about the world's first cloned baby? French scientist and Raelian cult member Brigitte Boisselier seems quite happy that a 35 year old "Yankee" woman gave birth to a girl (no father/sperm needed). Is the scinetific and political agenda to get rid of all men/males? Biblical end-time prophseys say that there will be a 7 women to 1 male ratio.

Hey Deborah, I phoned the "John Howard Hotel" on 08 8673 7007 to make a booking for a reservation. Firstly the phone rang out then I tried again and got attitude from the receptionist, I was shocked as I thought that attitude only belonged to those who live in large cities. I was told that I must have the wrong phone number. I was upset because firstly I thought that you had given me deliberate misinformation and secondly I was disappointed that I was not going to be able to relive the feelings I experienced while working as an art/yart teacher at Yasmar Juvenile Justice Detention Center, Habberfield, Sydney where a close friend and teacher, Scott was brutally stabbed to death by a student/inmate. I was looking forward to reliving the abuse, humiliation, desperation, suicidal and self-harm behaviours of the established and loyal clientele. Artists Statement:
I have chosen to illustrate politics in art, using the very creator of properganda and art to express the message - the church.
The male image represents the patriarchal system of power within the church. The female image, the feminine, accepted on the surface, but prevented from achieving powerful positions because of gender.
The hand of Fatimar, the prophets fingers associated with the power of healing, has an ambiguious message to STOP! HALT! WAIT!
The keyhole, entrance to the gateway of the heavens and enlightenment, is blocked from access.
The veil conceals, disguises, only partially revealing the true interior.
add comment
Hi Dorothy, as I held your print in my hands I was moved to kiss the head of the kneeling woman through the "clever veil" overlay and then with the middle finger of my right hand extended from a clutched fist I lay it ontop of the head of the standing male. 100% for medium extension concept. It is not only females of both feminine and masculine gender that are prevented from aspiring to positions of power but also males of feminine and masculine gender (what about the trans sexuals and the eunichs as well). Nepotism is the thing related to power. Why desire power anyway? Who took Jesus to the top of a "high place" and offered all the kingdoms of the world to him (power)if he bowed down and served him? A true church is when 2 or 3 people of like minded spirit gather to agree and that's it, that can be any place (not organised religion). This print also reminds me of the time the "YANKEE-WANKEE-SPANK-MES" sent numerous of their cash-cult evangelists to Australia to fleece the innocent. It crashed when their leader Jimmy Swaggart was caught recieving a blow job from a hungry hooker in a back lane in America. I'm talking about the Assembly of God (A.O.G.) cult and all of it's associated sub cults and branches. Check out Shirley Caesar's CD, a collection of her finest recordings, called "Hallelujah", in particular a song called "Oh Mary don't you weep". Tell us some of your print content related examples for our knowledge. . -M/Z Reply
Hello M/Z - The print depicts male control of some, (most?) religious institutions. Women perform most of the caring roles and maintaine presentation i.e. flowers, embroidery, cooking etc. Important issues though are discussed behind closed doors by male hierarchy, with women invited along to cook & serve scones. I agree that a true church can be anywhere, but it never seems to happen that way. Without somebody organising the "meeting" the venue would be unknown to new followers. Afterall, propaganda is about spreading the word of the gospels. Maybe it's in our make-up that a majority of us need to be led and that there's no such thing as an egalitarian church. Unfortunately some leaders, in their powerful roles, find it too difficult to endure honestly and are not beyond corruption. As you so eloquently point out there are many examples of corruption and fraud within organised religion. Most of these frailties are condemned by the church, even if often covered up. The subjugation of women is not only condoned by church heirarchy but also by many of the followers of all genders. The feminine grieves at the loss of her empowerment. The masculine looks down. The symbols are from Eastern and Western relgions as the subjugation of women is widespread in a culture that professes we are all equal. . -D/W Reply
Yes I agree the domination of the male code of ethics has rained far to long. Just look at the Bush/America etc at the moment their out of control. I would like to see more countrys especially this one with a woman priminister. Like New Zealand. Give peace a chance stop the rot. . -Michael Florrimell Reply

Although the culture of the non-aligned countries is normally male dominated, the following women; Indira Ghandi, Aung San Suu Kyi and Benazir Bhutto, led their people in times of crisis. Each of these women were popular with their constituents. Each one of them was either assassinated or at one point in time, or imprisoned. All had come from families which had a rich political history and their families were revered. All gained early experience living amongst politicians and watching their fathers or husbands at work. They capitalized on their families popularity in order to reform their country, to better prepare the population for what they perceived would be the next stage in their nations development. Needless to say, the conservative forces within their nation attempted to modify or destroy their vision.
This print has been designed using the format of a stamp. Stamps depict the national identity of a country. Pictorial and commemorative issues usually depict historical figures or generalized subjects and seldom represent the specific contemporary themes that lend themselves to controversial political statements.
Veiled Curtains: Indira Ghandi II
Indira Ghandi, (1917 - 1984), was Prime Minister of India (and the first woman Prime Minister of the largest democracy in the world), in 1966 - 77 and 1980 - 84. In 1964, the year of her fathers (Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru) death, Indira Ghandi was elected to Parliament where she held the position of Minister of Information and Broadcasting. Unable to agree on contenders for the position of Prime Minister, she was later picked as a compromise candidate. She held the office of Prime Minister from 1966 - 77. She was riding on the crest of popularity after Indias triumph in the 1971 war against Pakistan. The explosion of a nuclear device in 1974 helped to enhance her reputation among the middle-class as a tough and shrewd political leader.
In the second, post-emergency period of her Prime Ministership, Indira Ghandi was preoccupied by efforts to resolve the problems in the state of Punjab. In her attempt to crush the successionist movement of Sikh militants, she ordered an assault upon the holiest Sikh shrine in Amritsar, the Golden Temple. It is because of this attack on the Temple that Sikh militants waged their campaign of terrorism against the government. In June 1984, the Golden Temple was stripped clean of Sikh terrorists. However, the Temple was damaged and Mrs Ghandi earned the undying hatred of Sikhs, who bitterly resented the desacralization of their sacred site. In November 1984, she was assassinated at her residence by two of her own Sikh bodyguards, who claimed to be avenging the insult she had heaped upon their nation.
Images in the print show Indira flanked by her uncle, Mahatma Ghandi, on the right, who was assassinated during his term in office and, on the left, her son, Rajiv Ghandi who, whilst on the 1991 campaign trail, was killed by a bomb blast. Mahatma Ghandi made himself the force of nonviolence whilst Rajivs period in office was marred by scandals and allegations of corruption. The trio are framed in a Hindu Temple entrance outline and the overall print/stamp is encased in a deconstructed Indian paisley border design. The temple curtain in the background highlights iconic symbolism associated with Idiras terms of office as Prime Minister.
Images of guns depict her internal exploitation and use of the army to resolve internal disputes. A nuclear mushroom depicts her explosion of a nuclear device in 1974. A sectional image of the Sikhs Golden Temple depicts her attempt to crush the secessionist movement of Sikh militants whilst destroying and desacrilizing their sacred site. The flower images depict her assination in the garden of her home by her two Sikh bodyguards.

What types of stencils did you use (paper, gum acacia, photo,..)? Are the inks used water based, as I can't smell oil, turps or thinners when I sniff your print?

Hi Michael Z: Yes Michael, you're right. I used 9 transparent ink colours (9 passes), 4 opaque ink colours (5 passes) and 2 metallic ink colours (3 passes) totalling 17 passes for the print. All of the inks are oil based . . . I could really smell the turps at the time . . . even with a heavy duty respirator over my face! But I do love the 'egg shell' finish of the inks on the surface of the paper. I used photo stencils, gum acacia and a bit of bitumen for the stencilling part of the project.

Michael F: I've based the colours on the "Festivals of Colour" in India. At religious festivals there is a predominance of yellow, with yellow flowers such as marigolds or yellow hibiscus, a highly esteemed flower, piled around statues of goddesses in processions or in the temples. Hence the colour reference to Indira as a "political goddess". Holi, is a fertility festival where rainbow coloured powders, particularly red, purple and pink, are thrown at people followed by a squirt of water. The fertilty powder colours reference the strong family links of the Ghandi's and makes further comment on the family's political influence in the symbols depicted in the 'veiled curtain'.

MEDIUM/RESOURSE CHAT: On a visit to Urangan, QLD, I stopped to look in a second-hand/junk shop. There I found in a pile on a table a collection of "Art Training Institute Lessons" from a Melbourne College. I discussed it with the shop owner and was told that a priest/artist from Kingaroy, QLD once owned them. I bought them from her and found "Lesson 43" in the collection. Being an artist whom does not believe in reinventing the wheel and one who's right into recycling, I thought "HA-HA", it's collage' time. I then took a scapel knife, cut out sections and placed photographic images behind and on top of the recycled art training institute lesson sheet. I then scanned it on a OfficeJet G55 machine to get one combined image. I then had my new recycled, original print printed off. EPNP can do this.
MESSAGE/CONTENT CHAT: Title: "Where's Johnny?" (Australia's enlightened and one and only Prime Minister). The game is that you are to try and find Johnny. I will say "YES" or "NO" only to your observation/guess-work comments. Should Johnny not be found by any person, by 25.12.03, I will then tell you where Johnny is located in the print. I may also give you some directional clues prior to 25.12.03. Good luck at hunting for Johnny.

Johnny Johnny you stupid idiot Johnnny. What can anyone say except for bad things about a crap polly like Johnny. He is a racist and a war munger. He has taken Australia back 50 years , ruined our very fragile relations with Asia which we were trying to build up again. Put us into the fanatics eye and will probally get us all killed. You stupid stupid little bastard Johnny.

Yes, Johnny Dog is also sexist, as he said he would be willing to send both his sons to war, if necessary (but unlikely), but no mention of his daughter being involved on front line warfare if needed. So basically he thinks the precious daughter should stay at home and should not be treated equally with his sons. I say, send both his 2 dog pups and his 1 bitch pup equally, all on the front line with the 2000+ "wonderful Ozies" he has used as USA cannon fodder. George W Dog should also put his 2 precious, bitch pups with Tony Dog's 2 precious, bitch pups on the front line as well.

Not to mention that he has violated U.N. international agreements that we are signatories to and made Australia part of a vigilante ethos.Frightening times ! ! !

I say Marie youl be a strong contender for our 2004 portfolio, yep Johnny has sent the women of Australia back to the 1950s when sexism ran rampent. The sexist bastard wont give out service leave for pregnant women though all talk no action. He really has nothing to say in the year 2003 all his words are from 1950 when times were all very sad, just ask you parents about the 1950s they tell you. As for bush yep send him straight to the front line with all his concress etc.

Who are all these hollow men
Gathering up the stars?
While lesser mortals strive to be like them;
dreaming from afar.
Elbowed aside by the hollow men
Whose currency is all smiles,
The doomed are forced to try again
to catch a winning ride.
Everywhere spread the hollow men
guarding all their pride.
Everything to lose or gain-
But nothing at all inside.
That sainted gem security
Is what they most prize-
they wouldn't want without it to be
Only marginally less than their lives.
The hollow men all live with the fear
That one day the construction will collapse
And neither to the fore or the rear
Not whip nor sugar move a poor dead ass.
